Travelling by Air

Geneva Is still one of the high arrival airports for people going on a holiday to the alps. Easyjet offer flights from most of the main UK airports and you can now also travel from Bournemouth in the winter months. Flybe run from Southampton to Geneva again only during winter months. For people living in Northern Ireland they go direct to Geneva. From Geneva you have the option of car hire and driving to Tignes The drive takes around 3 – 3 1/2 hours, This is ideal for taking in the scenery of Lake Annecy, through the Olympic town of Albertville and on to Bourg Saint Maurice before heading up the mountain to Tignes. Driving is also fantastic for stocking up on those much needed supplies for the week.
Alternatively you can drive almost entirely on motorways from Geneva by taking the A40 and A41 motorways via Chambery and Albertville etc. The route is longer but relatively traffic free and therefore might well be quicker. Just remember to bring change for the tolls.

Grenoble Airport – Has improved flights during winter months and is getting easier to get to the Northern alps. Easyjet, Ryanair service this airport.

Chambery Airport – again this airport is being used more and becoming more popular with people who visit the alps regularly in the winter months as it is only 1 hour 45 away from Tignes. You can book flights with Jet2, Flybe and BMI Baby.

Other airports you can fly to are Lyon and Turin though these are sometimes found to be a bit more complicated with transfer to resort if not in a hire car.

Driving all the Way

If you find it much easier to drive yourself, then you can find plenty of ferries to choose from with P&O or Northfolkline. Please remember though if you are using a GPS in your car it can misdirect you onto routes that are closed during winter months, please check before leaving.

Parking – As Tignes is a very pedestrian friendly resort; parking can sometimes be very difficult during the winter months. I would suggest that you pre-book your parking space if you are planning on driving. There are underground car parks situated around resort, you can pre book your car parking by going to www.tignesnet.com and looking under transport and car parking. This site also has a bit on road conditions.

Travelling by Ski Train

Bourg St Maurice – The eurostar runs a ski train service from St Pancras and Ashford International stations. They run day and night service and are looking to improve their timings for this winter. To find out more go to www.eurostar.com

A public coach service is available between Bourg St Maurice station and Tignes. To find out more go to www.altibus.com

Buses

The roads to access the Haute Tarentaise region have been improved over the last few years. Transfers from all the above airports have also been improved and there is a good mix of buses or private transfer available.
